Two weeks, three new creative spaces and a whole lot of teamwork. Our latest Get Equipped project is coming to life at the Girls’ Empowerment Centre in Devchuli, Nepal.

It’s been an extraordinary week for our team in Nepal, where a new creative hub is rapidly taking shape, bringing music production, recording and podcasting facilities to the Girls’ Empowerment Centre.

What was recently one large room has been transformed into three dedicated spaces: a podcast studio, a music production room with three workstations, and a recording studio.

And while the equipment is an important part of the project, it’s the people behind the transformation who deserve a huge shout-out.

Built together, from the ground up

Our founder Jonny Lee and volunteer Lex Luca have been working closely with our Nepalese partners, including Deepak and Rejina, and a brilliant team of local craftspeople to bring the studios to life.

When the team arrived, the rooms had been constructed, but there was still plenty to do. Carpets, doors, furniture, acoustic treatment and equipment installation were all on the list.

One of the biggest challenges was managing the sound within the rooms.

Rather than relying on imported acoustic foam, Lex worked with local carpenters to develop bespoke acoustic panels using wooden frames, insulation and fabric.

Within hours, the craftspeople had produced a prototype. Over the following days, around 20 panels were being made, alongside additional ceiling treatments.

It’s a brilliant example of local expertise, practical problem-solving and what can happen when people share their knowledge and work together.

From local markets to the mixing desk

The team also headed out into the local town to source furniture and materials.

With Deepak leading negotiations and Lex, Jonny and Sam helping select what was needed, the group visited shops, markets and warehouses to find suitable furniture for the new spaces.

And then came the really exciting part.

As the furniture arrived and carpets were fitted, Lex began unpacking the equipment, setting up computers, connecting microphones and testing the recording systems.

Within days, the rooms were beginning to function as creative studios.

Speaking about the experience, Lex said:

“It’s been amazing the last few days. Pretty wild, to be honest, seeing it all in real life. Everyone’s just so nice and warm and welcoming. I feel really at home.”

More than a studio installation

Get Equipped has never been simply about delivering equipment.

It’s about working with trusted local partners to create opportunities for people to learn, experiment, develop skills and express themselves through music and creativity.

These new facilities will provide space for young people to explore everything from music production and songwriting to podcasting and storytelling.

And the most exciting thing?

The first workshops have already begun, with students getting behind the microphones and putting their new skills into practice.

There’s still work to do, but the progress has been incredible.

A huge thank you to Deepak, Rejina, the local craftspeople, our volunteers and everyone who has helped make this possible.

Three new creative spaces. A whole lot of possibilities. And another step towards building hope through music. ❤️
