The Song

"Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life" is a song written by Michael Cleveland for R&BNew Wavedance group Indeep. It features vocals from Reggie (Rejane Magloire) and Rose Marie Ramsey, and its protagonists recall how they were bored to death until a DJ played a hot song and saved their lives by giving new energy to the night. The song was released as a single in 1982 and became the most popular and successful hit released by its record label, Sound of New York with Becket Records. In the U.S. "Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life" reached number ten on the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart and number two on the Club Singles chart, and it peaked at number thirteen in the United Kingdom. The track appears as the third track of the namesake album released in 1983.

Rolling Stone magazine declared the song "one of the greatest songs ever written about being a girl, listening to the radio, or any combination of the two,"[1] and, in 2005, editors of Blender magazine placed it at number 406 on its 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born list. The song also provided the inspiration of the title of the book Last Night a DJ Saved My Life: The History of the Disc Jockey (2000). Because of the limited success of Indeep's later releases, the group's first single was its only major hit and placed it into the one-hit wonder category of artists. In 2004, UK house/trance music producer Seamus Haji made several popular remixes of the song through his own label, Big Love Records, and released them on a 12" single titled "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life (ATFC mixes)." This version reached number thirteen on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the UK Dance chart in 2006.

The song is sampled during Madonna's performance of her song "Music" on her Sticky & Sweet Tour. The song is featured in the 2002 video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on one of the in-game radio stations which are accessed while driving. It plays on the station called "Fever 105".

Indeep's other members were songwriter-musician Mike Cleveland and Rose Marie Ramsey.

The song was also re-released and remixed a number of times by various DJ's–producers, most notably Seamus Haji, Funkagenda, and ATFC.[2] Additionally, house/dance music singer Lula recently released an unrelated song of the same name officially titled "Last Night a D.J. Saved My Life (While a DJ Gave Me Trouble)," featuring Papa Joe, along with a number of remixes on KULT Records. This song reached Number six on the top of the Billboard Magazine Dance Chart.[3]

The Book

Last Night a DJ Saved My Life is a book written by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton about the history of DJing published in 2000. A compilation album of the same name was released with the book. The album contains various clips ranging from 1970s reggae to Handel's Largo, the first song to reach radio airwaves, in 1906. The book takes its name from the Indeep single "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life."[1] In 2006, The Observer named Last Night... #45 on their list of the greatest music books.[2]

Both experienced journalists, Brewster and Broughton seek to chronicle the role of the DJ in the 20th century.[3] Starting from Jimmy Savile, who was effectively the first DJ, Broughton and Brewster track the rise of the DJ as a figure in music.[4] The authors champion the idea that the DJ is an "unsung hero" of popular music and is an artist himself.[1] In examining the place of a DJ over time, Last Night... also follows the rise and fall of various musical genres and subcultures.[1]

The companion album, which was compiled by Brewster himself, serves as an overview of dance and DJ music.

REJANE MAGLOIRE

Biography

Rejane’s dream of becoming a singer was catalysed by the early death of her beloved father and Rejane believed she could soothe her grieving mother's sadness by singing her favourite songs to her every night. By the age of eleven, Rejane's overwhelming talent was apparent, so mother and daughter embarked on the adventure of making the dream come true.

The path to her dream incorporated a productive entertainment career covering television with a part in “The Electric Company” starring Morgan Freeman; TV commercials for Coca Cola and McDonalds; and a movie lead role in “The Story of Wilma Rudolph” starring Denzel Washington.

During this time, Rejane was pursuing her musical talent, studying opera, as well as various vocal techniques. The musical dream took off a few years later when a record producer, Reggie Thompson, suggested she sing a song which he had written for the group, “Indeep”. That record sold millions and Rejane travelled the four corners of the world performing the hit “Last Night the DJ Saved My Life”.

Rejane’s style and talent led to collaborations with other artists such as Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, Toots Thielemens and French artists such as Arno, Alain Chamfort and Sacha Distel. Later Rejane joined the group, “Technotronic”, known for hits such as “Pump up the Jam”, making number 1 on the Top of the Pops. Rejane's debut with the group, singing “Move that Body”, hit number 10 on the Top of the Pops.

Rejane’s background and all these musical endeavours inspired a new artistic adventure combining Rejane's love for classical music and hip hop. Together with a philharmonic orchestra and using urban beats, Rejane created her spectacular latest album “Forbidden Opera”, released by EMI Virgin classics in 2005.
